A Man with Palsy Brought to Jesus - Luke 5:18

Luke the beloved physician wrote, “And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them”, and in chapter five and verse eighteen of his book Luke shares how, “men brought in a bed a man which was taken with palsy” where we read:

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy:

and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.

The verse reads,And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: Luke began with the words, “and behold” or “and look, lo and consider” “men brought in a bed” which means “male human beings carried, moved and rushed in a couch for sleeping” “a man which was taken with a palsy” or “a male human being who was inflicted, weakened, enfeebled and afflicted with the relaxing of the nerves, unstrung and weak of limb”. Luke shared how “men” carried upon a bed a “man” who was afflicted with a disease that weakened in his limbs.

The verse continues, and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. Luke added the words, “and they sought means” which means “and the men carrying the man looked, searched for and inquired after a way” “to bring him in” or “to lead or carry the man with the palsy into the place where Jesus was teaching”, “and to lay him before him” which means “to set, place, fix and establish in front of and in the presence of Jesus”. Luke shared how the men carrying the man with palsy were looking for a way they could place him in front of Jesus.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another horrific case of physical infirmity that caused a weakening of a man's limbs and the relaxing of his nerves. This debilitating condition caused the man not to be able to “carry” himself anywhere, and he was dependent upon his friends to “bring” him to Jesus. These men were determined to get their friend in front of Jesus, and with the massive crowd surrounding Him, access to Jesus was difficult. Their belief was that Jesus could help their friend, and in the same way there are many people today who need the assistance of others to “bring” them before the Lord. The most horrific “disease” a person has is called “sin”, and there are many who need to “bring” their friends to the only One who has a “cure” for their condition. Perhaps there are those reading these words who themselves need to be “carried” before Jesus. Consider this writing to be “a bed” upon which you are being carried before Jesus the Christ and Messiah of the world.

Next time Luke shares how the men let the man with palsy, “down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
