Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli and Nagge - Luke 3:25

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna and Joseph, and in chapter three and verse twenty-four of his book Luke continued to share the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum,

which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “ who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Matthathias” which means “gift of Jehovah”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Amos” which means “burden” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Naum” which means “consolation”. Luke continued with the names “gift of Jehovah, burden and consolation”.

The verse continues, “... which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,” Luke added the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Esli” or “reserved of Jehovah”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to “Nagge” or “illuminating”. Luke shared two more names in the lineage of Jesus - “reserved of Jehovah and illuminating”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see more of the story of Jesus through the names in His lineage. “Gift of Jehovah, burden and consolation, reserved of Jehovah and illuminating” all speak to the idea of God desiring to redeem people from their sinful state. Jesus came to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world, and those who examine the names of His earthly ancestors will discover the plan of God to provide not only forgiveness of sins, but also everlasting life with Him.

Next time Luke adds more of the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
