Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam and Er, and in chapter three and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke continued to share the lineage of Jesus where we read:
Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim,
which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,
The verse reads, “Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, ...” Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jose” which means “he will be sustained of Jehovah”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Eliezer” which means “God is his help” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jorim” which means “whom Jehovah has exalted”. Luke recorded three additional names who were ancestors of Jesus - “he will be sustained, God is his help and whom Jehovah has exalted”.
The verse continues, “... which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, ...” Luke added the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Matthat” or “gift of God”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Levi” or “joined”. Luke shared two more names in Jesus' lineage - “gift of God and joined”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover more of the passion of God to save mankind through the names of the ancestors of Jesus. “He will be sustained, God is his help, whom Jehovah has exalted, gift of God and joined” all speak to God's intention to be involved in the lives of every person who will put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus. God will “sustain” those who trust in Jesus. God will “help” those who trust in Jesus. Jesus is the One God has exalted, and Jesus is His “gift” to be “joined” unto mankind. Those who are wise will study the names of Jesus' ancestors and realize God intends for them to receive His Son Jesus as their Messiah, Christ, Son of God, Savior and Lord.
