Jesse, Obed, Booz, Salmon and Naasson - Luke 3:32

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, Mattatha, Nathan and David, and in chapter three and verse thirty-two of his book Luke added more names to the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz,

which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Jesse” which means “wealthy”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Obed” which means “serving” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Booz” which means “in him is strength”. Luke added three more names to Jesus' lineage - “Wealthy, serving and in him is strength”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson, ...” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Salmon” or “raiment: a garment”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to” “Naasson” or “enchanter”. Luke shared the names of two more of Jesus' earthly ancestors - “raiment: a garment and enchanter”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover more of the intention of God to redeem mankind through His Son Jesus in these names provided. “Wealthy, serving, in him is strength, raiment: a garment and enchanter” speak to the idea of God owning everything and yet “serving” mankind with His abundance. He provides “strength” to people through His Son Jesus, and He will clothe them with “a garment” of righteousness when they yield their lives to Him. Finally He “enchants” them or “solicits them” in a way that is “indeclinable” if they will yield their lives to Him, and when they do, they shall be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. Oh the wonder of this Marvelous God whose plan of salvation has been extended through the names of Jesus' earthly ancestors.

Next time Luke adds more names to the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
