Jesus Teaching in Capernaum - Luke 4:31

Luke the physician shared how all the people listening to Jesus within, “the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, ...”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-one of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “came down to Capernaum” where we read:

And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

The verse reads, “and came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, ... Luke began with the words, “and came down” or “and descended or departed” “to Capernaum” which refers “to a village of comfort and was a flourishing city situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee or Lake of Gennesaret near the place where the Jordan flows into the lake”, “a city of Galilee” or “an abode, habitation and town belonging to Galilee which means circuit and was the name of a region of northern Palestine, bounded on the north by Syria, on the west by Sidon, Tyre, Ptolemais and their territories and the promontory of Carmel, on the south by Samaria and on the east by the Jordan”. Luke shared how Jesus departed from the crowd of people who wanted to kill Him in Nazareth and went to the “city of Capernaum” which was His home base for ministry.

The verse goes on to say,... and taught them on the sabbath days. Luke continued with the words, “and taught them” which means “and held didactic discourses, imparted instruction and instilled doctrine to the people in Capernaum“on the sabbath days” or “on the seventh day of each week which was a sacred festival on which the Israelites were required to abstain from all work”. Luke shared how Jesus delivered “doctrinal teachings” to the people in Capernaum on the “Sabbath days”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus continued His ministry among people even after people attempted to destroy Him. Jesus simply “moved on” to others who might hear what He had to say. God does not “force” Himself upon anyone, and when people reject His “gospel of salvation”, He moves on to others who accept it. God loves everyone, and He offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to those who put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus. Those who are wise will consider how the “gospel of Jesus Christ” continues whether a person believes it or not.

Next time Luke shares how the people, “were astonished at his doctrine”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
