Cainan, Arphaxad, Sem, Noe and Lamech - Luke 3:36

Luke the physician shared about Jesus' lineage who came through Matthat, Levi, Melchi, Janna, Joseph, Mattathias, Amos, Naum, Esli, Nagge, Maath, Mattathias, Semei, Joseph, Juda, Joanna, Rhesa, Zorobabel, Salathiel, Neri, Melchi, Addi, Cosam, Elmodam, Er, Jose, Eliezer, Jorim, Matthat, Levi, Simeon, Juda, Joseph, Jonan, Eliakim, Melea, Menan, Mattatha, Nathan, David, Jesse, Obed, Booz, Salmon, Naasson, Aminadab, Aram, Esrom, Phares, Juda, Jacob, Isaac, Abraham, Thara, Nachor, Saruch, Ragau, Phalec, Heber and Sala, and in chapter three and verse thirty-six of his book Luke adds more names in the lineage of Jesus where we read:

Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem,

which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,

The verse reads, “Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, ... Luke began with the words, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to“Cainan” which means “their smith, lance maker or possessor”, “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to“Arphaxad” which means “stronghold of Chaldees” “which was the son of” or “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to“Sem” which means “name”. Luke continued to share other names connected to Jesus' lineage - “their smith, stronghold of Chaldees and name”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech, ...” Luke continued with the words, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to“Noe” or “rest”, “which was the son of” which means “who was the offspring and progeny belonging to“Lamech” or “why thus with you? or unto bringing low”. Luke gave two more names within the ancestral line of Jesus - “rest and unto bringing low”.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how these names also send a message to mankind concerning Jesus the Messiah. “Their smith, stronghold of Chaldees, name, rest and unto bringing low” tell the story of Jesus being the “artisan” who delivers people from the Chaldees which is a type of the world, and it is His “name” that delivers those who have been “brought low”. Jesus Christ came into the world to share the “gospel” or “good news” of God that mankind may be saved from their sins by believing and trusting in Him. Those who yield their lives to Jesus submit themselves to the “name that is above all names”, and they shall be forgiven of their sins and receive “everlasting life” with God.

Next time Luke continues with the names in the lineage of Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
