What is Truth? - John 18:38

The apostle John wrote how the Jewish leaders brought Jesus to Pilate, and after he spoke with Jesus the first time, Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Say you this thing of yourself, or did others tell you of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you unto me: what have you done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from here. Pilate therefore said unto him, Are you a king then? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth hears my voice”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirty-eight of his book John shared how Pilate asked Jesus, “What is Truth?” where we read:

Pilate said unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in him no fault at all.

The verse reads,Pilate said unto him, What is truth? John began with the words, “Pilate said unto him” which means “Pilate whose name means armed with a spear uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked him, Jesus”, “what is truth” or “that which is truthful, what is true in any matter under consideration, real and factual”? John shared how “Pilate” asked Jesus “what” the “truth” is.

The verse goes on to say, “And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and said unto them, I find in him no fault at all.” John continued with the words, “and when he had said this” or “and at the time and moment he, Pilate, uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked the question about truth”, “he went out again” which means “he, Pilate, left, departed and went forth another time” “unto the Jews” or “toward the Jewish people including the high priests, priests, servants and officers”, “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “I find in him no fault at all” or “I, Pilate, have discovered and found present not one single cause or reason which was worthy of punishment in Jesus”. John shared how “Pilate” returned to the “Jewish leaders and people” outside the “Praetorian” and told them that he did not find any “error or cause” for which to punish Jesus.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how “Pilate” declared Jesus to be without “fault”, and so there was no reason to punish Him never mind putting Him to death. Jesus was innocent and without sin, and He is “the way, the truth and the life”. (See John 14:6) He was God's perfect sacrifice for the sins of mankind, and even though people crucified Jesus, He was without error, mistake, sin and wrong. Paul the apostle wrote, For he has made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (See 2 Corinthians 5:21) Jesus died so people may have a personal relationship with God, and anyone who yields their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with God. Let all who read these words surrender to Jesus.

Next time we see John shares how Pilate says, “you have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
