Paul the apostle share
with the church members in Corinth how he and his companions,“had
the sentence of death in ourselves”,
and they knew they, “should not trust
in ourselves, but in God which raises the dead”.
In
chapter one and verse ten of Second Corinthians, Paul shared how God,
“delivered us from so great a death”,
where we read:
Who
delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver: in whom we
trust that he will yet deliver us;
The verse begins, “Who
delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver:”
Paul began with the words, “who
delivered us” which
means “God rescued Paul and his companions”
“from so great” or
“out of and away from such an age, in bulk and so great a size of”
“a death” which
means “that separation, whether natural
or violent, of the soul and the body by which the life on earth is
ended”, “and does deliver”
which means “God continues to rescue”. Paul acknowledged “God's
deliverance” from the plight of “death”
both imminent and future for he and his companions.
The
verse goes on to say, “in
whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;”
Paul added the words, “in whom” which
means “in God” “we trust”
which refers to “Paul and his companions expect and confide as well
as hope and have faith in” “that he will
yet deliver” or “that God will in the
future draw one to rescue” “us”
which means “Paul and his companions”. Paul had confidence that
God would still and even now “rescue” he and his companions from
their “imminent death”.
When we consider these
words from Paul, we see how God is involved through exercising
“faith” that He will “deliver” when
“afflictions” come even when that “affliction” is “death”.
God designed the human race so they would rely upon Him when troubles
come, and the most difficult trial is “death” from which
Paul and his companion's were delivered. Jesus Christ came to give
“eternal life” to everyone who believes in Him, and when
He paid the price for our sins, we know he has “delivered, does
deliver and will deliver us” even as he did Paul and his
companions.
Next
time Paul refers to
the church members, “helping
together by prayer for us”
so read ahead,
and we shall join together then.
