Paul
the apostle wrote to
the church members in Corinth, “To
whom you forgive any thing, I forgive
also:”,
and he added, “for if I
forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it
in the person of Christ;”.
In
chapter two and verse eleven of Second Corinthians, Paul told the
church members he did this that he, “Lest
Satan should get an advantage of us:”,
where we read:
Lest Satan
should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his
devices.
The verse begins, “Lest
Satan should get an advantage of us:”
Paul began with the word, “lest”
which means “in order that and albeit”
“Satan” or “the
accuser and inveterate adversary of God and Christ”
“should get advantage” which
means “might have more, a greater part or share, be superior,
excel, surpass and overreach” “of
us” or “of
Paul, his companions and the church members”.
Paul knew he and the church members needed to “forgive” this man
within the church and each other or “Satan” would be able to make
himself superior and surpassing to them.
The verse goes on to say,
“
for we are not ignorant of his devices.”
Paul continued with the word, “for” which
means “even as, indeed, no doubt, seeing then, verily and
therefore” “we are not ignorant”
which refers to “Paul, his companions and the church members are
not without understanding, in error, sin, wrong or mistaken” “of
his devises” or “of Satan's mental
perception, thought, evil purpose and mind”. Paul and his
companions were aware of Satan's “evil thoughts and purposes”.
When we think through these words of Paul, we see his
warning concerning “Satan” and his “evil thoughts and ways”.
Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to
kill, and to destroy:”, and Paul and his companions knew it. He
also knew that Jesus added, “I am come that they might have
life, and that they might have it more
abundantly.”, and when we believe and trust in Jesus, we
possess all we need to “resist the devil” and cling unto
God “lest Satan” takes “advantage” of us.
Next
time Paul tells the
church members when he
“came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel”,
“a door
was opened unto me of the Lord”,
so read
ahead, and we shall join together then.
