A Kingdom and House Divided - Luke 11:17

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spoke; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casts out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven”, and in chapter eleven and verse seventeen of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “knowing their thoughts, said unto them, every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation” where we read:

But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falls.

The verse reads, “But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation;” Luke began with the words, “but he” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus”, “knowing their thoughts” which means “perceiving, noticing and discerning the sentiments of the people who believed He cast out devils by Satan and desired a sign from him”, “said unto them” or “uttered, declared and proclaimed to those people”, “Every kingdom” which means “each, the whole, all and everyone of the dominions, kingships and sovereignties that exists” “divided against itself” or “at variance and in dissension into opposing parts” “is brought to desolation” which means “is laid waste, ruined, despoiled and stripped of it's treasures”. Luke shared how Jesus said all “divided” “sovereignties” will be “ruined and wasted”.

The verse continues, “and a house divided against a house falls.” Luke added the words, “and a house” or “and a dwelling place, abode, habitation or household” “divided against a house” or “at variance and in dissension into opposing parts” “falls” or “descends from a higher place to a lower, comes under judgment and condemnation and is overcome by terror or astonishment or grief or under the attack of an evil spirit”. Luke shared how Jesus said “households” that are “divided” will eventually “come to destruction and grief”.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see the danger to “kingdoms” and “households” that are “divided”. Jesus said divided kingdoms and homes would be “brought to desolation” and “fall”. So many people know this to be true, and unity within “kingdoms” and “homes” is necessary for remaining together. God desires to have a close, loving and personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they no longer become “divided” from Him, but shall find unity with God and receive the power of His Holy Spirit to remain unified in their “kingdoms” and “homes”.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
