Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus, “was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casts out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falls”, and in chapter eleven and verse eighteen of his book Luke shared how Jesus asked, “If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?” where we read:
If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?
because you say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.
The verse reads, “If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand?” Luke began with the words, “If Satan” or “whether Satan whose name means adversary and is the prince of evil spirits and the inveterate adversary of God and Christ” “also be divided against himself” which means “even so and indeed is at variance and in dissension into opposing parts to his own self”, “how shall his kingdom stand” or “in what way and manner will Satan's dominion, rule and reign stay set, fixed, established and made firm”. Luke shared how Jesus questioned the ability for “Satan's kingdom” to continue if he is “divided against himself”.
The verse goes on to say, “because you say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.” Luke continued with the words, “because you say” or “since and on account that the people who said Jesus cast out devils by Satan utter, declare and proclaim” “that I cast out devils” or “that Jesus drive out, expels and compels demons to depart” “through Beelzebub” or “by means of Beelzebub whose name means lord of the house or flies and is the prince of evil spirits”. Luke shared how Jesus made His statement concerning Satan being divided against himself because the people said He “cast out” demons by the means of “Beelzebub”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus told the people their reasoning was wrong because any “kingdom” or “house” divided against itself will not stand. Therefore, if “Satan” came against himself, his rule would not be viable either. God rules over all the spirits in the world, and He sent His Son Jesus to defeat the works of “Satan” regardless of how powerful they may seem. “Satan” wants his “kingdom” to “stand” and be influential against every person, and only those who rely upon, cling to and trust in Jesus Christ, God's Son, will be aligned with the one who able to overpower any efforts of the devil.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus asks, “if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
