A Pharisees Invitation to Dine - Luke 11:37

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness. If your whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle gives you light”, and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him” where we read:

And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him:

and he went in, and sat down to meat.

The verse reads, “And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him:” Luke began with the words, “and as he spoke” or “and while Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “a certain Pharisee” which means “a particular religious leader of the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life”, “besought him to dine with him” or “asked, entreated, begged and beseeched Jesus to eat a meal with him”. Luke shared during the time when Jesus was speaking, a particular religious leader known as a “Pharisee” asked Him to eat a meal with him.

The verse continues, “and he went in, and sat down to meat.” Luke added the words, “and he went in” or “and Jesus entered the Pharisee's place”, “and sat down to meat” which means “and was seated or relining to the food to consume”. Luke shared how Jesus entered the “Pharisees” house and reclined to eat with him.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn of another “Pharisee” who invited Jesus to “eat” with him. Jesus did not refuse to go, but rather accepted his offer, entered his home and was seated to dine with him. God desires to have fellowship and communion with every person through His Son Jesus, and He provided Jesus as the way for people to enjoy a relationship with Him. Those who are wise will receive Jesus into their lives by believing and trusting in Him as their “Savior and Lord” and invite Him to “come and dine” with them.

Next time Luke shares, “when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
