Allowing the Deeds of Your Fathers - Luke 11:48

The beloved physician Luke wrote how about Jesus, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them”, and in chapter eleven and verse forty-eight of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers” where we read:

Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers:

for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers.

The verse reads, “Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers:” Luke began with the words, “truly you bear witness” or “wherefore, therefore and then you lawyers affirm, give testimony to, testify and give honest report” “that you allow” which means “that you lawyers permit, consent with, agree to and applaud” “the deeds” or “the business, employment, undertaking, labor and acts” “of your fathers” which means “belonging to you lawyers' progenitors and ancestors”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “lawyers” were “consenting and agreeing with” the acts against the prophets of old performed by their “ancestors”.

The verse goes on to say, “for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers.” Luke continued with the words, “for they indeed killed them” or “because, since and on account that even so did the lawyers' progenitors and ancestors inflicted mortal death upon, extinguished, abolished and destroy the prophets”, “and you build their sepulchers” which means “and you lawyers erect erect, construct, found and establish memorials, monuments, graves and tombs”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “lawyers' male ancestors” “abolished and destroyed” the prophets of old, and the “lawyers” erected “monuments and memorials” to them.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus indited both the ancestors of these “lawyers” as well as the “lawyers” themselves. The “fore-fathers” of the “lawyers” “destroyed” the prophets of old, and they built “memorials” for the very ones they “killed”. The current day “lawyers” observed the same practice of erecting “monuments” as to show themselves “holy, righteous and following good spiritual practices”, and yet, they “destroyed” or “attacked” Jesus the “Christ” who was the focus of the ministry of the prophets in the first place. God desires a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when a person yields their life to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they have fulfilled the purpose and plan for the prophets of old. Otherwise, they simply observe religious practices that do no more than commemorate themselves for their righteous deeds.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “I will send them prophets and apostles”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
