Luke the beloved physician wrote how concerning Jesus, “then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying you reproach us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Truly you bear witness that you allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers”, and in chapter eleven and verse forty-nine of his book Luke shared how Jesus proclaimed how God said, “I will send them prophets and apostles” where we read:
Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles,
and some of them they shall slay and persecute:
The verse reads, “Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, ...” Luke began with the words, “therefore also said” or “then, on this account and afterward even so and indeed uttered, declared and proclaimed” “the wisdom of God” which means “the broad and full of intelligence which is used of the knowledge of very diverse matters belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”, “I will send them prophets” or “God would discharge, appoint and assign to the religious leaders known as lawyers, men who were moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman who solemnly declared to men what they have received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “and apostles” which means “and delegates, messengers, ambassadors and commissioners of Christ”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to “God” intentionally “assigning” both “prophets” and “apostles” to people and the “religious leaders”.
The verse continues, “and some of them they shall slay and persecute:” Luke added the words, “and some of them” or “and a number of the prophets and apostles” “they shall slay” which means “people would kill, abolish, inflict mortal death upon and destroy” “and persecute” or “and drive out, banish and oppress with calamities”. Luke shared how Jesus said people, particularly religious leaders, would not only “drive them out, banish them and oppress them with calamities” the “prophets and apostles” sent by God, but they would also “kill and destroy” them.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn how God commissioned “prophets and apostles” to declare the principles of His Kingdom, and yet, those to whom He sent them “banished, oppressed, killed and destroyed them”. God has been intentional in having people believe and trust in Him, and when His Son Jesus came into the world to be the “Christ”, God sent people to proclaim His message again. From ages past until the present time, people “oppress and attempt to destroy” those who bring the “good news” of God. God desires a loving personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and because sin separates them from God, Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. Those who believe and trust in Jesus will be forgiven of their “sins” and inherit everlasting life with God. Those who do not align themselves with the religious leaders and people who sought to abolish the “salvation” message of Almighty God.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “that the blood of all the prophets … may be required of this generation”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
