Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus how, “the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things. Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him”, and in chapter twelve and verse one of his book Luke shared how Jesus said to His disciples, “Beware you of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy” where we read:
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they tread one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware you of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.
The verse reads, “In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they tread one upon another, ...” Luke began with the words, “in the mean time” or “from that point in time”, “where there were gathered together” which means “there was assembled and collected together into one place” “an innumerable multitude of people” or “an unlimited number or myriad of human beings both male and female”, “insomuch that” which means “so that, then, therefore and wherefore” “they tread one upon another” or “the people trampled each other with rudeness, spurning and insulting neglect”. Luke shared during the time Jesus was speaking to the “religious leaders” there assembled a massive group of people who were “trampling” one another as they moved in close to Him.
The verse continues, “... he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware you of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” Luke added the words, “he began to say” or “Jesus made a beginning of uttering, declaring and proclaiming” “unto his disciples” which neans “toward Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “first of all” or “before any other thing and in the first place in rank”, “beware you” which means “be attentive and take heed disciples” “of the leaven” or “pertaining to the inveterate mental and moral corruption and tendency to affect others” “of the Pharisees” which means “belonging to the sect that seems to have started after the Jewish exile. In addition to Old Testament books the Pharisees recognized in oral tradition a standard of belief and life”, “which is hypocrisy” or “that is dissimulation and stage playing”. Luke shared how Jesus warned His “disciples” to “chiefly begin” by “taking heed and being attentive to” the “moral corruption” belonging to the “Pharisees” because it was “stage playing and dissimulation”.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how people assembled around Jesus again, and this time the crowd was so large they “trampled” one another. After seeing this, Jesus warned His disciples against the “hypocritical doctrine” of the religious leaders known as “Pharisees”. Even though these “Pharisees” were religious, they only performed their religious duties to be seen by men. Inwardly, these “religious leaders” were “fake, unreal and stage players”. Jesus exposed their pernicious ways, and warned His “students” against it. God wants a genuine relationship with every person through His Son Jesus, and when they yield their lives to Him as their “Savior and Lord”, not only will they align with God's truth, but they will also be aware of the “doctrine of hypocrisy”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says to His disciples, “there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
