Luke the beloved physician wrote, “when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here”, and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-three of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place” where we read:
No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel,
but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.
The verse reads, “No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, ...” Luke began with the words, “no man” or “not one person whether male or female”, “when he has lighted a candle” which means “at the time and moment the man kindled and set fire to a portable lamp, illuminator or wax candle”, “puts it in a secret place” or “places, sets and establishes the candle in a hidden or concealed place”, “neither under a bushel” which means “nor beneath a basket for holding about sixteen sextarii or a peck of dry measure”. Luke shared how Jesus said no one, when they light a “lamp or candle” put it under a “bushel basket” after lighting it.
The verse continues, “but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.” Luke continued added words, “but on a candlestick” or “nevertheless, notwithstanding, nay and rather upon a lamp stand or candelabrum”, “that they which come in” which means “so the people who enter their home” “may see the light” or “might discern and perceive the illumination by their eyes”. Luke shared how Jesus said a person who lights a “candle” puts it upon a “lamp stand or candelabrum” so people who enter their home may be able to see.
When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus referred to a person who “lights” a “candle or lamp”, and afterward, they don't hide the “light”. They put it upon a “lamp stand or “candelabrum” so the “light” will illuminate their home. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (See John 8:12), and when He spoke concerning the “light”, all who will understand His words should yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and walk in the “light as he is in the light”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “the light of the body is the eye”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
