The beloved physician Luke wrote, “No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light”, and in chapter eleven and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “the light of the body is the eye” where we read:
The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light; but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness.
The verse reads, “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light;” Luke began with the words, “the light of the body” or “the candle or lamp belonging to a person's physical body” “is the eye” which means “is the sight, vision and faculty of knowing”: “therefore” or “then, wherefore, consequently and accordingly” “when your eye is single” which means “at the time and moment a person's physical eye, sight, vision and faculty of knowing”, “your whole body” or “a person's entire, all and complete physical body” “also is full of light” which means “even so and indeed is well lit, of bright character, transparent and well-illuminated”. Luke shared how Jesus said when a person has a “clear” and “unadulterated” “eye” their entire “body” is “illuminated and clear” as well.
The verse goes on to say, “but when your eye is evil, your body also is full of darkness.” Luke continued with words, “but when your eye” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment a person's physical sight, vision and faculty of knowing” “is evil” which means “is full of labors, annoyances, hardships and toils and is wicked and bad”, “your body” or “the person's physical body” “also is full of darkness” which means “even so and indeed is covered, opaque and benighted”. Luke shared how Jesus said when a person's “sight, vision and faculty of knowing” is “wicked and bad”, their entire “physical body” is completely “covered and benighted”.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus declared how person who has “sight, vision and faculty of knowing” has a “clear” eye. In other words, whether a person “sees” unadulterated or clearly depends upon whether they have a “clear eye”, otherwise, they “observe the world” as “opaque, dark and benighted”. God desires to put the “light” of His “gospel” or “good news” within every person through relationship with His Son Jesus, and when they submit their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” they shall “see” the world with a “body” and life” that is “full of light”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “take heed therefore that the light which is in you be not darkness”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
