The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When a strong man armed keeps his palace, his goods are in peace”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-two of his book Luke shared how Jesus referred to what happens, “when a stronger than he shall come upon him” where we read:
But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him,
he takes from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divides his spoils.
The verse reads, “But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, ...” Luke began with the words, “but when” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover at the time and moment” “a stronger than he shall come upon him” which means “a mightier, more forcible, firm and sure person than the strong man keeping his palace approaches and encounters him”, “and overcome him” or “and will conquer, prevail and get the victory over the strong man”the following will happen. Luke shared how Jesus referred to when a “man” who is “more powerful” than the original strong man appears and conquers the man protecting his home.
The verse goes on to say, “... he takes from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divides his spoils.” Luke continued with the words, “he takes from him” or “the stronger man carries off, removes bears off from the original strong man” “all his armor” which means “each, every, the whole and every part of the original strong man's shield, sword, lance, helmet, greaves and breastplate” “wherein he trusted” or “in which the original strong man trusted, had confidence and conciliated”, “and divides his spoils” which means “and distributes and gives over the original strong man's weapons and valuables ”. Luke shared how the “stronger man” is able to “carry off” the “armor, weapons and valuables” of the one he “conquers” and is “victorious” over.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus employs this example to demonstrate how it takes one who is “stronger” to overpower one who is “strong”. Jesus is “stronger” than any “wicked or evil spirit” who comes against people, and when a person yields their life to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they align themselves with the greatest power that exists.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “he that is not with me is against me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
