Luke the beloved physician wrote how Jesus said, “When a strong man armed keeps his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he takes from him all his armor wherein he trusted, and divides his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathers not with me scatters”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus says what happens, “when the unclean spirit is gone out of a man” where we read:
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest;
and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out.
The verse reads, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest;” Luke began with the words, “when the unclean spirit” or “at the time and moment the not cleansed, impure, morally lewd, demonic and foul essence which is devoid of all or at least all grosser matter and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding and acting” “is gone out of a man” which means “has departed from, come forth from and been cast out or expelled from a person whether male or female”, “he walks through dry places” or “the unclean spirit ambles through waterless locations, inhabited places, villages or districts”, “seeking rest” which means “looking, aiming, craving for and demanding cessation of any motion, business or labor”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to when “demonic spirit” is “cast out” of a man. He said the “spirit” ambles about through “waterless” locations “craving” a cessation of labor, motion and business.
The verse goes on to say, “and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out.” Luke continued with the words, “and finding none” or “and discovering, recognizing, acquiring, getting, obtaining and procuring no rest”, “he says” which means “the unclean spirit utters, declares and proclaims”, “I will return unto my house” or “I will go back to the unclean spirit's original location” “whence I came out” which means “from where the unclean spirit was expelled and cast out”. Luke shared how Jesus said because the “unclean spirit” was unable to discover any place of rest, he decided to go back to his original location from where he was expelled.
When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we discover what Jesus said happens with “unclean spirits” when they are cast out of a person. “Unclean spirits” evidently are “restless” when they are “expelled”, and they wander about to find a place where they may gain “cessation of labor and motion”. Jesus said they roam about until they decide to “return” to their place of origin in a person. Jesus will say more about this in our next verse, but let us be aware of what Jesus said about these “unclean spirits”, and be certain we believe and trust in Him as our more powerful personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the cast out spirit finds the house, “swept and garnished”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
