The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus said, “When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walks through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, I will return unto my house whence I came out”, and in chapter eleven and verse twenty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus said the cast out spirit finds the house, “swept and garnished” where we read:
And when he comes, he finds it swept and garnished.
The verse reads, “And when he comes, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he comes” which means “the unclean spirit arises and appears”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to how the “unclean spirit” returns to the original person in whom he resided.
The verse continues, “... he finds it swept and garnished.” Luke added the words, “he finds it” or “the unclean spirit discovers, observes, learns and discovers the place he was located” “swept” which means “cleaned and brushed off by sweeping” “and garnished” or “and put in order, arranged, made ready, prepared, ornamented and adorned”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “unclean spirit” discovers that the place he was located has be cleaned by sweeping and is “made ready and adorned”.
When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus said the “unclean spirit” discovers the place from where he was cast out has been cleaned and prepared. The idea is that “nothing” filled the man from whom the “unclean spirit” was expelled. God knows there is a “void” within every person that is reserved for His Son Jesus, and He desires to fill that “void” with Himself. Those who yield their lives to Jesus Christ will find themselves fully “occupied” with no opportunity for any “unclean spirit” within which to reside.
Next time Luke shares how Jesus says the evil spirit, “takes to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
