The Record of John the Baptist - John 1:19

John the apostle wrote how, “No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him, and in chapter one and verse nineteen of his book, John shared how, “this is the record of John” where we read:

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him,

Who are you?

The verse reads, “And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ... John began with the words, “and this is the record or “and the selfsame writing in this book exists as the testimony, evidence and witness” “of John” which means “belonging to John whose name means Jehovah is a gracious giver, and this John was known as John the Baptist”, “when the Jews” or “at the time and moment the people belonging to the Jewish nation” “sent priests” which means “dispatched ones who offer sacrifices and in general busied with sacred rites” “and Levites” or “and ones from the tribe of Levi which means joined” “from Jerusalem” which means “separate and apart from Jerusalem which means set you double peace” “to ask him” or “to inquire of and question John the Baptist”. John shared how the “people who belonged to the Jewish nation” came together with their “priests and Levites” who were from Jerusalem to ask John the Baptist the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... Who are you?” John added the word, “who” which means “what person or entity” “are you” or “do you exist as”? John shared how the “religious leaders” questioned John the Baptist as to who he “was”. “John the Baptist” was the forerunner to the Messiah and Christ who is Jesus, and because the “priests and Levites” believed themselves to be overseers to the “Jewish” religion, they sought to know who John thought he was.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how “religious leaders” were sent from “Jerusalem” to discover who John the Baptist thought he was. John the Baptist was the forerunner to the Messiah Jesus, and because God loves every person, those who put their faith and trust in His Son Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life with God. God's plan was to reveal Himself to mankind through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will carefully consider all God did to prepare men to receive His Son.

Next time John shares how John the Baptist says, “I am not the Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
