John the apostle wrote how, “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me”, and in chapter one and verse sixteen of his book, John shared how, “of his fullness have all we received” where we read:
And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.
The verse reads, “And of his fullness have all we received, ...” John began with the words, “and of his fullness” or “and pertaining to the Word or Jesus' completeness, abundance and what is filled” “have all we received” which means “have each, every, the whole and everyone of us laid hold of, claimed and procured”. John shared how he and Jesus' other followers “all” claimed and procured everything Jesus could offer them.
The verse continues, “... and grace for grace.” John added the words, “and grace” which means “and that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm and loveliness” “for grace” or “because of that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm and loveliness”. John shared how God's “grace” was provided through Jesus which demonstrated His “joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm and loveliness” toward mankind.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how he and the other followers of Jesus “received” everything the Lord Jesus desired for them, and since Jesus came, He showed how God was “gracious” and filled with love toward people. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and because He sent Jesus to demonstrate His “grace” to everyone who believes and trusts in Him. Those who are wise will “receive” from Jesus all His “fullness” and enjoy the “grace upon grace” that He brings.
Next time John shares how, “grace and truth came by Jesus Christ”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
