John the apostle wrote how, “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth”, and in chapter one and verse fifteen of his book, John shared how, “John bare witness of him” where we read:
John bare witness of him, and cried, saying,
This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
The verse reads, “John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, ...” John began with the words, “John bare witness of him” or “John the Baptist gave testimony, good report, conjure and uttered honorably pertaining to Jesus”, “and cried” which means “and shouted aloud, vociferated”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. John shared how John the Baptist testified concerning Jesus as he shouted aloud the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... This was he of whom I spoke, He that comes after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.” John continued with the words, “This was he” which means “this One called the Word, Jesus, exists as the person” “of whom I spoke” or “who I, John the Baptist, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “He that comes after me” which means “the Person, One, Jesus, who arises, comes forth, shows itself and finds place behind, in back of and aback of me, John the Baptist” “is preferred before me” or “has come into being, received being and happened in advance of me, John the Baptist”: “for he was before me” which means “because, since and on account that the Word, Jesus, was in advance of and happened in front of John the Baptist”. John shared how John the Baptist declared that Jesus was the “One” about whom he had previously “spoken”, and he explained how Jesus existed in advance of him.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn about John the Baptist's mission while he lived on the earth. Jesus existed before John the Baptist, and His advancement on the scene was preeminent over him. God loves people so much that He sent His Son Jesus to bring them into a personal relationship with Himself. Those who believe and trust in Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, receive eternal life and enjoy being in the family of God.
Next time John shares, “of his fullness have all we received”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
