The apostle John wrote how, “Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he said unto Philip, Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do. Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little. One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said unto him, There is a lad here, which has five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand”, and in chapter six and verse eleven of his book, John shared how, “Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples” where we read:
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
The verse reads, “And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, ...”. John began with the words, “And Jesus” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate” “took the loaves” which means “lay hold of and procured the five barley loaves”; “and when he had given thanks” or “and at the time and moment Jesus expressed gratitude or said grace for the meal”, “he distributed to the disciples” which means “Jesus divided, gave over and delivered the loaves to His students, pupils and attendants”. John shared how Jesus procured the “loaves”, gave thanks for them and delivered them to His “disciples”.
The verse continues, “... and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.” John added the words, “and the disciples” which means “and Jesus' students, pupils and attendants gave the loaves” “to them that were set down” or “to the men who were seated”; “and likewise” which means “and in the same manner” “of the fishes” or “from the fishes” “as much as they would” which means “however much the people wanted, desired or wished”. John shared how Jesus “disciples” gave the people who were seated as many “loaves and fishes” as they desired.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus had an order to the distribution of His miraculous meal. He gave the “loaves and fish” to His disciples, and they gave the people as much as they wanted of them. In other words, Jesus more than supplied the physical need of food to feed the entire crowd. Jesus is a miracle worker, and although there were only five loaves and two fishes at the beginning, Jesus multiplied them so they could feed everyone in the multitude. God loves blessing people, and He not only provided them with “earthly” food and it's provisions, He also provided His Son Jesus who died on the cross to pay the penalty for the sins of everyone. Now everyone who believes in Jesus may “spiritually” live with God forever. Let all who read this miracle feeding by Jesus know He is indeed the Messiah and Christ of God, and those who are wise will yield their lives to Him.
Next time John shares how the people, “were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
