The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people looking for Him, “No man can come to me, except the Father which has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes unto me. Not that any man has seen the Father, save he which is of God, he has seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”, and in chapter six and verse fifty-three of his book, John shared how Jesus told the people, “except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you” where we read:
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,
Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
The verse reads, “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you,”. John began with the words, “then Jesus said unto them” or “therefore, wherefore, consequently and these things being so the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to the Jewish people”, “Verily, verily” which means “truly, truly or surely, surely”, “I say unto you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you, Jewish people” the following words. John shared how Jesus certifiably declared the following statement to the “Jewish people”.
The verse continues, “Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” John added the words, “Except you eat” which means “unless you, Jewish people, devour and consume” “of the flesh” or “pertaining to the physical body” “of the Son of man” which means “belonging to God's Son Jesus”, “and drink his blood” or “and imbibe of His bloodshed”, “you have no life in you” which means “you, Jewish people, do not have life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever within you, Jewish people”. John shared how Jesus said “unless” a person “consumes” of His “physical” body and “drinks” His “blood”, they do not have “life” that is “real and genuine” within them.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus certifiably declared that people “must” “eat of His flesh” and “drink His blood” or they do not have “real and genuine” life within them. The idea was they must “consume” Him through belief and trust in who He is. Jesus is the “Christ” of God who came to give His physical body in death to pay the price for the sins of all mankind. God loves everybody, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields their life to His Son Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting “life” with Him and His Father God.
Next time John shares how Jesus tells the people, “whoso eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
