The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word, and believes on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-six of his book, John shared how Jesus said, “as the Father has life … so has he given to the Son to have life” where we read:
For as the Father has life in himself; so has he given to the Son to have life in himself;
The verse reads, “For as the Father has life in himself;”. John began with the words, “For as the Father” or “because, since and on account in like manner and likeness the Heavenly Father God” “has life in himself” which means “holds, owns and possesses life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever within His own self”. John shared how God Himself possesses “life” which is active, vigorous, blessed, genuine and real” within His own self.
The verse continues, “so has he given to the Son to have life in himself;” John added the words, “so has he given” which means “in the same manner and likeness God the Father has bestowed, granted, furnished and supplied” “to the Son” or “to His Son Jesus” “to have life in himself” which means “to hold, own and possess life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever in His own self”. John shared how the “life” God had within Himself was “granted and bestowed” upon Jesus the Son as well.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how the “life” which was in “God the Father” was supplied and furnished to His Son Jesus as well. God the Father was in His Son Jesus when He came to the earth to give His life for a sacrifice for the sins of every person, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and granted everlasting life with Him. Let all who read these words know God has “life” within Himself, and He has given that “life” to His Son so that all who submit and yield themselves to Him will be saved and inherit everlasting and eternal “life” with Him in Heaven.
Next time John shares how Jesus says the Father, “has given him authority to execute judgment also”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
