Search the Scriptures - John 5:39

The apostle John wrote how Jesus in speaking about the testimony of John the Baptist said, “I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father has given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me. And the Father himself, which has sent me, has borne witness of me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he has sent, him you believe not”, and in chapter five and verse thirty-nine of his book, John shared how Jesus said, “search the scriptures” where we read:

Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

The verse reads, “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life:”. John began with the words, “search the scriptures” or “examine and investigate the writings within the Holy Scriptures”; “for in them” which means “because, since and on account that within the Holy Scriptures” “you think you have eternal life” or “you, Jewish people hold, own and possess never ceasing, without beginning and never ceasing vitality, absolute fullness of life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body), and to last for ever.” John shared how Jesus instructed the “Jewish people” to “investigate” the “Holy Scriptures” because their “thinking” was that within them they obtain and possess “real, genuine and everlasting” “life”.

The verse goes on to say, “and they are they which testify of me.John continued with Jesus' words, “and they are they” which means “and the Holy Scriptures are the words, witness, experience and revelation” “which testify of me” or “that give witness and good report pertaining to Jesus”. John shared how Jesus said the “Holy Scriptures” bear “witness” of Him.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus Himself said the “Holy Scriptures” give a “witness” that He is indeed the Messiah and Son of God. Anyone who carefully studies and examines the “Holy Scriptures” of God will discover Jesus is the “Christ” sent by His Father God to be the “Savior and Lord” of the world. When a person puts their faith and trust in Him, they will be forgiven of their sins and inherit everlasting life from God. Those who are wise will study the “Bible”, “Holy Scriptures”, and yield to Him.

Next time John shares how Jesus says, “you will not come to me, that you might have life”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
