The apostle John wrote how Jesus', “disciples went down unto the sea, And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near unto the ship: and they were afraid”, and in chapter six and verse twenty of his book, John shared how Jesus said to the disciples, “be not afraid” where we read:
But he said unto them, It is I; be not afraid.
The verse reads, “But he said unto them, It is I;”. John began with the words, “But he said unto them” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed , “it is I” which means “It is me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus told His disciples it was Him walking on the water.
The verse continues, “be not afraid.” John added the words, “be not” which means “do not exist as” “afraid” or “put to flight by terrifying, scared or fearful”. John shared how Jesus instructed His disciples not to be “fearful or scared”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus knew His disciples were “afraid”, and He sought to comfort them with His presence. Though they were unaware of Him, He was not unaware of them. God is an omnipresent God who knows everything about everyone. He sent His Son Jesus to be the “Savior” of the world because He knew every person was a “sinner”. (See Romans 3:10 and 3:23) Jesus Christ knows the conditions of everyone, and He is ready to receive every person who puts their “faith and trust” in Him.
Next time John shares how Jesus' disciples, “willingly received him into the ship”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
