The apostle John wrote how Jesus fed five thousand men with five loaves and two fishes, and “When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten”, and in chapter six and verse fourteen of his book, John shared how the people say, “this is the prophet that should come into the world” where we read:
Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said,
This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
The verse reads, “Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, ...”. John began with the words, “Then those men” or “at that time the people both men and women”, “when they had seen the miracle” which means “at the time and moment the people observed, notice, discovered and discerned the supernatural wonder, sign, token or unusual occurrence of feeding five thousand men with five barley loaves and two fishes”, “that Jesus did” or “which was performed and produced by the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate”, “said” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed” the following words. John shared how the people who observed the “supernatural work” performed by Jesus by feeding the five thousand with “five barley loaves and two fishes”, they “said” the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.” John continued with the words, “this is of a truth” which means “this man, Jesus, is most certainly, truly and in reality” “that prophet” or “the one who is moved by the Spirit of God and hence his organ or spokesman, solemnly declares to men what he has received by inspiration, especially concerning future events, and in particular such as relate to the cause and kingdom of God and to human salvation” “that should come into the world” which means “who is to arise, appear and come forth into the earth”. John shared how the people who observed this miracle of Jesus determined that Jesus was certainly the “prophet” who was foretold to them who “should come” to the “earth”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how the people began to judge Jesus after seeing the miracle of feeding the five thousand men. They decided He was the “prophet” foretold to them who would “save” their nation, and they were ready to act upon this belief. Jesus came to “save” the world from the penalty of “sin”, and because His purpose was spiritual, we shall see how He responds to their conclusion. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the world, so that “whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life”. (See John 3:16) Those who are wise will yield their lives to Jesus who is not only able to do “miracles” in the physical realm, but also is capable of doing the greatest “miracle” of all – forgiving sins and granting eternal life to all who believe.
Next time John shares what happened, “when Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
