How Can This Man Give Us His Flesh to Eat? - John 6:52

The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people looking for Him, “No man can come to me, except the Father which has sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that has heard, and has learned of the Father, comes unto me. Not that any man has seen the Father, save he which is of God, he has seen the Father. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believes on me has everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world”, and in chapter six and verse fifty-one of his book, John shared how the people asked, “how can this man give us his flesh to eat?” where we read:

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

The verse reads,The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, ...”. John began with the words, “the Jews therefore” or “the people within the Jewish nation by origin, birth and religion then, wherefore and consequently” “strove among themselves” which means “ quarreled, disputed and contended with their own selves”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring, proclaiming and asking” the following words. John shared how the “Jewish people” began to “quarrel” among themselves after Jesus told them He was the “bread from heaven” and they would have to “eat His flesh”.

The verse continues, “... How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” John added the words, “how can this man” which means “in what way is this male human being able and capable to” “give us his flesh” or “ to grant, bestow, furnish and supply His own physical body” “to eat” which means “to consume and devour”? John shared how the Jewish people wanted to know “how” Jesus could supply them with His “physical body” to “devour and consume”.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how the “Jewish people” were only thinking about the “physical devouring” of Jesus' body. Jesus was speaking of a “spiritual consumption” or “belief” in Him. Jesus is the Christ and Messiah of God who came to the earth to provide sustenance for everlasting life with God. God loves every person, and His desire is to have a personal relationship with them through His Son Jesus. Anyone who yields their life to Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins and be granted eternal life with God. Let all who read these words understand the spiritual implication of “consuming” Jesus and receive Him for the eternal “nourishment” He came to be.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells the people, “except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, you have no life in you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
