The apostle John wrote after Jesus fed a huge multitude with five barley loaves and two fishes, Jesus told His disciples to, “Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, he departed again into a mountain himself alone”, and in chapter six and verse sixteen of his book, John shared, “when even was now come, his disciples went down into the sea” where we read:
And when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea,
The verse reads, “And when even was now come, ...”. John began with the words, “and when even” or “and at the time and moment that the evening hour” “was now come” which means “arose and appeared” the following took place. John shared how the “evening” of that day fell, and the following event occurred.
The verse goes on to say, “... his disciples went down unto the sea,” John continued with the words, “his disciples” which means “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “went down” or “descended and came from a higher place to a lower place” “unto the sea” which means “to the large body of water which was the Sea of Galilee”. John shared how Jesus' “disciples” descended from where they were to the “sea” below them.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' disciples responded to the people wanting Jesus to be their King as they “descended” from their location to the “sea”. We shall see what happens in our next few verses, but for now let it suffice us to know Jesus often left His disciples to make decisions for themselves. Though He was not physically present with them, He knew what they were doing and where they were doing it. God is “omni-present”, and He always knows the position and location of people. He sent His Son Jesus to be their “Savior and Lord” so wherever they traveled, He would be with them. Let all who read these words “believe”.
Next time John shares how Jesus' disciples, “entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
