The apostle John wrote how Jesus told the people looking for Him, “I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except you eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eats my flesh, and drinks my blood, dwells in me, and I in him. As the living Father has sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eats me, even he shall live by me”, and in chapter six and verse fifty-eight of his book, John shared how Jesus told the people, “this it the bread that came down from heaven” where we read:
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead:
he that eats of this bread shall live for ever.
The verse reads, “This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead:”. John began with the words, “this is that bread” or “exists as the food and nourishment” “which came down from heaven” which means “that descended from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings”: “not as your fathers” or “and in no way or manner like your, the Jewish people's, progenitors and forefathers” “did eat manna” which means “ate food that nourished the Israelites for forty years in the wilderness which was called what is it”, “and are dead” or “and have perished and breathed their last”. John shared how Jesus again referred to the “death” of the Jewish people who ate the “manna” after they left Egypt and wandered in the wilderness for forty years.
The verse goes on to say, “he that eats of this bread shall live for ever.” John added the words, “he that eats” which means “the person whether male or female who consumes and devours” “of this bread” or “pertaining to the food and nourishment spoken by Jesus” “shall live for ever” which means “will be alive, enjoy real life, be full of vigor, active, powerful and efficacious toward the unbroken age, perpetuity of time and eternity”. John shared how Jesus said the person who “consumes” the “nourishment” He provides will continue to “live” throughout all eternity.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus reemphasized the idea of the person who consumes of Him living “forever”. Jesus knew people who believe and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and be granted everlasting life with God. His desire is for everyone to yield their lives to Him. He knows not everyone will, but the offer is still available to all. Temporary satisfaction through “food” and other “earthly temporal appeasements” will lead to “death”, but submitting to Jesus will have “eternal and everlasting” benefits to everyone who believes.
Next time John shares how, “these things said he in the synagogue”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
