The apostle John wrote when people found Jesus asked Him, “What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign show you then, that we may see, and believe you? what do you work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which comes down from heaven, and gives life unto the world”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-four of his book, John shared how the people say to Jesus, “evermore give us this bread” where we read:
Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
The verse reads, “Then said they unto him, ...”. John began with the words, “then said they” or “at that time the people who looked for Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto him” which means “to Jesus” the following words. John shared how the people responded to Jesus speaking about the “Heavenly food” by saying the following words.
The verse continues, “...Lord, evermore give us this bread.” John added the word, “Lord” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “evermore give us this bread” or “at all times and always grant, bestow, furnish and supply this food and nourishment from Heaven to us”. John shared how the people wanted Jesus to always “supply” them with the “nourishment” from “Heaven”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the people desired to have the “food or bread” from Heaven of which Jesus spoke. Because the promise of Jesus inferred they would never be unsatisfied with this “bread”, they desired it. God wants people to receive His “bread” from Heaven, who is Jesus, so they will be “satisfied” in their souls for all eternity. People look for all other things to “satisfy” them, but all other things are insufficient to do so. Those who are wise will put their faith in God's “bread from Heaven”, Jesus, and receive forgiveness for their sins and inherit everlasting, eternal life from God.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “I am the bread of life”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
