Two Hundred Pennyworth of Bread - John 6:7

The apostle John wrote how, “Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he said unto Philip, Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do”, and in chapter six and verse seven of his book, John shared how, “Phillip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them” where we read:

Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them,

that every one of them may take a little.

The verse reads, “Philip answered him, Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, ...”. John began with the words, “Philip answered him” or “Philip who was Jesus' disciple whose name means lover of horses responded and began to speak to Jesus”, “two hundred pennyworth of bread” which means “two hundred denarius which means containing ten” “is not sufficient” or “will not suffice, be enough or be satisfactory” “for them” which means “on behalf of the multitude”. John shared how “Philip” responded to Jesus' test by declaring “two hundred denarius” or “two hundred day's pay” would be insufficient to buy enough food for all the people.

The verse continues, “... that every one of them may take a little.John added the words, “that every one of them” which means “so each person in the crowd” “may take a little” or “might lay hold of, claim, procure a small amount”. John shared how Philip continued his answer to Jesus by saying the “two hundred denarius” would only provide a small portion for each person to eat.

When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn how Philip began to do the mathematics to determine the physical cost for supplying food for all the people who were following Jesus. Some might say it was natural for him to think in this manner, but the Son of God and Christ of the world was standing before him. Jesus knew what He was going to do, and it did not require accumulation of money to supply the multitude's need. God has an abundant supply to furnish all who believe and trust in His Son Jesus with their every need. Let all who read these words remember, Jesus is not limited by physical resources, and He is able to perform a physical or spiritual miracle to supply whatever a person needs.

Next time John shares how, “Andrew, Simon Peter's brother” began to respond to Jesus, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
