How Do We Work the Works of God? - John 6:28

The apostle John wrote when people found Jesus, “on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him has God the Father sealed”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-eight of his book, John shared how the people asked Jesus, “what shall we do, that we might work the works of God?” where we read:

Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

The verse reads,Then said they unto him, ...”. John began with the words, “then said they” or “at that time the people who were searching for Jesus uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked” “unto him” which means “to Jesus” the following words. John shared how the people who were looking for Jesus asked Him the following question.

The verse continues, ... What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?John added the words, “what shall we do” which means “what is the thing that we must prepare, produce or bear”, “that we might work” or “so we, the people looking for Jesus, may exercise, perform and produce” “the works of God” which means “the business, acts, deeds and whatever is accomplished that belongs to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”? John shared how the people questioned Jesus as to “what” they must “do” to act upon the “deeds and business” of “God” Himself.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we see how the people who were looking for Jesus wanted to know what they could “do” that would be acting upon the “labors” that God the Father wanted. Rather than just “believe” upon Jesus, they wanted to “perform” some act or deed that would comply with what God the Father desires. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to be the “Savior and Lord” of every person who will believe in Him. There are no “acts or deeds” that will provide the eternal “salvation” people need. Only Jesus could pay the ultimate price of death for sins because He was perfect in every way and without sin. Those who yield their lives to Jesus will be forgiven for their sins and be granted everlasting life with God, and nothing performed or acted upon by anyone except Jesus can accomplish the goal of living forever with God.

Next time John shares how Jesus tells the people the work of God is, “that you believe on him whom he has sent”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
