The apostle John wrote when people found Jesus asked Him, “What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign show you then, that we may see, and believe you? what do you work?”, and in chapter six and verse thirty-one of his book, John shared how the people told Jesus, “our fathers did eat manna in the desert” where we read:
Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
The verse reads, “Our fathers did eat manna in the desert;”. John began with the words, “Our fathers” or “the people who looked for Jesus' male ancestors and progenitors” “did eat manna” which means “ate, consumed and devoured food for angels which means what is it” “in the desert” or “within the solitary, lonely, desolate and uninhabited wilderness”. John shared how the people told Jesus how their “fore-fathers” consumed “food” within the wilderness.
The verse goes on to say, “as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.” John continued with the words, “as it is written” which means “in the way and manner it was delineated and formed in letters within the holy scriptures”, “he gave them bread from heaven” or “God the Father granted, furnished, supplied and provided food separated and apart from the region above the sidereal heavens, the seat of order of things eternal and consummately perfect where God dwells and other heavenly beings” “to eat” which means “to consume and devour”. John shared how the people who searched for Jesus referred to the way God provided their nourishment from the “Heavenly region”.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how the people responded to Jesus by referring to the way God provided “food” for their fore-fathers while they were in the wilderness. (See Exodus 16). This, to them, was a “sign” from God that He was true, and they thought Jesus should prove Himself in a similar manner. God loves people, and though He is capable of doing miracles, He has done the greatest miracle of all when He died upon the cross to provide salvation from the penalty of sins for mankind. He was resurrected three days later, and now those who put their faith and trust in Him will be forgiven of their sins and given everlasting life with God. Let all who consider these words yield their lives to Jesus who alone provides what is necessary to live with God forever.
Next time John shares how the people tell Jesus, “Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
