The apostle John wrote when people found Jesus, “on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, Rabbi, when did you come here? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, You seek me, not because you saw the miracles, but because you did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him has God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?”, and in chapter six and verse twenty-nine of his book, John shared how Jesus told the people the work of God is, “that you believe on him whom he has sent” where we read:
Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent.
The verse reads, “Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, ...”. John began with the words, “Jesus answered” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the people who were seeking Him”, “this is the work of God” or “the following words describe the labor, business, act and deed belonging to the Godhead bodily and trinity which is comprised of God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit”. John shared how Jesus responded to the people who wondered what “work of God” they could perform by saying the following words.
The verse goes on to say, “... that you believe on him whom he has sent.” John continued with the words, “that you believe on him” which means “that you, people seeking for Jesus, trust in, rely upon, cling to and have confidence within” “whom he has sent” or “the person God dispatched and assigned”. John shared how Jesus declared “believing” in Him whom God His Father sent was the “work of God”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn that they only thing required to have a personal relationship with God is to “believe in” His Son Jesus. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (See John 3:16), and those who trust in, rely upon and cling to Jesus have “done” the only “labor” required of them to be saved.
Next time John shares how the people ask Jesus, “what sign show you then, that we may see, and believe you?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
