The apostle John wrote how Jesus said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father do: for what things soever he does, these also does the Son likewise. For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things that himself does: and he will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. For as the Father raises up the dead, and quickens them; even so the Son quickens whom he will. For the Father judges no man, but has committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honors not the Son honors not the Father which has sent him”, and in chapter five and verse twenty-four of his book, John shared how Jesus declared what happens to, “he that hears my word” where we read:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word, and believes on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
The verse reads, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word, and believes on him that sent me, ...”. John began with the words, “Verily, verily” or “truly, truly or surely, surely”, “I say unto you” which means “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to you Jewish people”, “He that hears my word” or “the person whether male or female who is endowed with the faculty for hearing, attending to, considering, understanding and perceiving my, Jesus', speech, uttered sayings, decrees and mandates”, “and believes on him” which means “and is persuaded, has confidence in and trusts in God the Father” “that sent me” or “who dispatched and assigned me, Jesus” shall gain the following. John shared how Jesus certifiably declared that any person who “perceives and understands” His “speeches and decrees” and “has confidence and trust” in His Father God shall has the following.
The verse continues, “... has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John added the words, “has everlasting life” which means “holds, owns and possesses never to cease, without ending and eternal life real and genuine, active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ and after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body) which will last forever”, “and shall not come into condemnation” or “and will in no way arise, come forth or appear in separating, sundering and sentence of condemnation, damnatory judgment or punishment”; “but is passed” which means “nevertheless, notwithstanding and moreover exists as removed and departed from one place to another” “from death unto life” or “separated and apart from the separation of the soul and the body by which the life on earth is ended with the implied idea of future misery in hell to life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous, devoted to God, blessed, in the portion even in this world of those who put their trust in Christ, but after the resurrection to be consummated by new accessions (among them a more perfect body) which is to last for ever”. John shared how Jesus said the person who “believes and trusts” in Him shall obtain “eternal never ceasing life”, will not be “condemned” and are removed from “separation from death” unto “life which is active and vigorous”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn the importance of “hearing” and “believing” in Jesus. Those who believe in God's Son Jesus will inherit “everlasting life” with God. They will not be “condemned”, and they shall “pass” from “death to life”. Dying is certain for every person, and anyone who is living shall surely face the judgment of God afterward. (See Hebrews 9:27). God loves people, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the whole world so they might have a personal relationship with Him. Anyone who submits their life to Jesus will inherit “eternal life” with God in Heaven, but woe be to those who refuse and reject Jesus who is the only begotten Son of God.
Next time John shares how Jesus says, “the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
