A First of Seven Brothers Dying without Children - Luke 20:29

The beloved physician Luke how there came to Jesus, “certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-nine of his book Luke shared how the religious leaders say, “there were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children” where we read:

There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

The verse reads,There were therefore seven brethren:” Luke began with the words, “there were therefore” or “there existed then, wherefore and consequently” “seven brethren” which means “seven men who were brothers from the same father or mother”. Luke shared how the “Sadducees” presented the circumstance of there existing “seven brothers”.

The verse goes on to say, and the first took a wife, and died without children.” Luke continued with the words, “and the first” or “and the chief or principal and firstborn brother” “took a wife” which means “possess and acquired a female spouse”, “and died without children” or “and breathed his last, expired or perished not having any offspring or progeny”. Luke shared how the “Sadducees” told Jesus the first of the “seven brothers” took to himself a “wife” but “died” without having any offspring or progeny.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn more about the illustration the “Sadducees” were presenting to Jesus to consider. They told Him there existed “seven brothers”, and the first of them “married” a woman, but “perished” before having any “children”. This meant his younger brother was to marry his widow and produce a child in his name. God's plan for the perpetuity of the Jewish nation was to bring about His Messiah and Savior. That man's name is Jesus, and when people believe and trust in Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, they align with His plan of “salvation”, be forgiven of their sins and receive everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders say, “the second took her to wife, and he died childless”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
