Marveling at Jesus' Answer - Luke 20:26

Luke the beloved physician wrote concerning Jesus, “the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly, neither accept you the person of any, but teach the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt you me? Show me a penny. Whose image and superscription has it? They answered and said, Caesar's. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-six of his book Luke shared how, “they could not take hold of his words before the people” where we read:

And they could not take hold of his words before the people:

and they marveled at his answer, and held their peace.

The verse reads,And they could not take hold of his words before the people:” Luke began with the words, “and they could not take hold” or “and the spies sent forth by the chief priests and scribes were unable and incapable of catching, taking possession of and seizing” “of his words” which means “pertaining to Jesus' speeches and utterances” “before the people” or “in front and in the presence of the human beings both male and female”. Luke shared how the “spies” were unable to “catch” Jesus in His words in the presence of the “people”.

The verse continues, and they marveled at his answer, and held their peace.” Luke added the words, “and the marveled” or “and the spies were in wonder and admiration” “at his answer” which means “at Jesus' response and reply”, “and held their peace” or “and kept silent and concealed”. Luke shared how Jesus the “spies” were in awe at Jesus' response, and they were silent afterward.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn how the “spies” were unable to “catch” Jesus in His words, and they were left “speechless” after Jesus answered them. No one has the words to “catch” Jesus in His speech, and though they try, He still came to save them from their sins. God is able to “silence” all who attempt to “test and try” Him, but they are much better off to yield their lives to His Son Jesus and receive forgiveness of their sins and everlasting life with God. .

Next time Luke shares how, “then came to him certain of the Sadducees”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
