Seeking to Destroy Jesus - Luke 19:47

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought, saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but you have made it a den of thieves”, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-seven of his book Luke shared how, “the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him” where we read:

And he taught daily in the temple.

But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,

The verse reads,And he taught daily in the temple.” Luke began with the words, “and he taught daily” or “and Jesus delivered didactic discourses, instructed and held discourses” “in the temple” which means “within the sacred worship place located in Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus “gave instructions and held discourses” within the “sacred place” in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him,Luke continued with the words, “but the chief priests” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the principal ones who held the priest offices” “and the scribes” which means “and the men learned in the Mosaic law and in the sacred writings who served as interpreters and teachers” “and the chief of the people” or “and the first in influence, principal and honored belonging to the crowd and multitude” “sought to destroy him” which means “aimed, demanded, craved and desired to render useless, abolish and put to a ruin to Jesus”. Luke shared how the “religious leaders” known as the “chief priests, scribes and chief of the people” desired to stop Jesus by “destroying” Him.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn what Jesus did when He entered into Jerusalem. He cleansed the temple, and He taught the people in the there. Jesus wanted people to know about the “Kingdom of God”, and they were blessed to have heard about it first hand from Him. However, this in no way pleased the religious leaders. Even though God desires for people to know Him, and He have given His Son Jesus to pay the price for their sins so they may live with Him forever, there are many who refuse and reject Him. The “religious leaders” were wrong, and anyone who defies Jesus Christ as their personal “Savior and Lord” shall find themselves on the side of error. Let all who read these words hear and heed the teaching of Jesus who has their best interest and future in mind.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders, “could not find what they might do”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
