Jesus to Ask One Thing - Luke 20:3

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus, “taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the chief of the people sought to destroy him, and could not find what they might do: for all the people were very attentive to hear him, and it came to pass, that on one of those days, as he taught the people in the temple, and preached the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders, And spoke unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority do you these things? or who is he that gave you this authority?”, and in chapter twenty and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus answered, “I will also ask you one thing; and answer me” where we read:

And he answered and said unto them, I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:

The verse reads,And he answered and said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he answered” or “and Jesus responded and began to speak” “and said unto them” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to the religious leaders” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to respond to the “religious leaders” with the following words.

The verse goes on to say, ... I will also ask you one thing; and answer me:Luke continued with the words, “I will also ask you” or “I, Jesus, will even so and indeed inquire and question you chief priests, scribes and chief of the people” “one thing” which means “on particular and certain question”; “and answer me” or “and respond to me, Jesus”. Luke shared how Jesus said He would “ask” the religious leaders “one” question, and He wanted them to respond.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus answered a question with a question. Rather than respond to the “religious leaders'” question the way they desired, Jesus told them He would ask them a question in response. We shall see what that question is in our next verse, but for now let us understand that these “religious rulers” were questioning the Creator of the Universe, and they insinuated they knew more than He. Let all who read Jesus' words yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” and understand He has greater wisdom than any person shall ever know.

Next time we see Luke share how Jesus asked a question about, “the baptism of John”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
