The Children of This World Marry - Luke 20:34

Luke the beloved physician how there came to Jesus, “certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, Saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children. And the second took her to wife, and he died childless. And the third took her; and in like manner the seven also: and they left no children, and died. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore in the resurrection whose wife of them is she? for seven had her to wife”, and in chapter twenty and verse thirty-four of his book Luke shared how Jesus answered, “the children of this world marry, and are given in marriage” where we read:

And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

The verse reads,And Jesus answering said unto them, ...” Luke began with the words, “and Jesus answering” or “and the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation responded and began to speak” “said unto them” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to the Sadducees” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to respond to the “Sadducees'” question.

The verse continues, “... The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:” Luke added the words, “the children” or “the offspring and progeny” “of this world” which means “belonging to the present period of time and age” “marry” or “are wed”, “and are given in marriage” which means “and are presented and granted to be wed”. Luke shared how Jesus referred to the way people get “married” and give away their daughters in “marriage” in this present world or age.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we learn the beginning of Jesus' response to the question presented by the “Sadducees”. They wanted to know which of the “seven brothers” would be married to the woman who was a wife to all of them and widowed to each of them. Jesus began His answer with the difference between life on earth, and life in Heaven. He will say more about this in our next verse, but suffice it for now to understand there is a difference between the two. God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of the world because they separated mankind from a relationship with Him, and the eventual penalty for “sin” is “death”. (See Romans 6:26) Life is eternal and continues after the one on earth, and because God wants every person to receive “everlasting life” with Him, those who believe and trust in His Son Jesus will be forgiven of their sins and be granted eternal life. Let all who read these words understand, there is a great difference between life on earth and life eternal thereafter.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus continues, “they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world … neither marry, nor are given in marriage”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
