The Sadducees Denial - Luke 20:27

The beloved physician Luke wrote concerning Jesus, “the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had spoken this parable against them. And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor. And they asked him, saying, Master, we know that you say and teach rightly, neither accept you the person of any, but teach the way of God truly. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no? But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt you me? Show me a penny. Whose image and superscription has it? They answered and said, Caesar's. And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's. And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marveled at his answer, and held their peace”, and in chapter twenty and verse twenty-seven of his book Luke shared, “then came to him certain of the Sadducees” where we read:

Then came to him certain of the Sadducees,

which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,

The verse reads,Then came to him certain of the Sadducees, ...” Luke began with the words, “then came to him” or “at that time Jesus was approached by” “certain of the Sadducees” which means “particular ones who belonged to the religious group known as Sadducees which means the righteous and were a religious party at the time of Christ among the Jews, who denied that the oral law was a revelation of God to the Israelites, and who deemed the written law alone to be obligatory on the nation, as the divine authority”. Luke shared how Jesus was approached by the “religious group” known as the “Sadducees”.

The verse goes on to say, “... which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him,” Luke continued with the words, “which deny” or “who speak against, gainsay, contradict and oppose” “that there is any resurrection” which means “that there exists a rising from the dead or being raised to life again”; “and they asked him” or “and the Sadducees questioned and inquired of Jesus” with the words in our next verses. Luke shared how the “Sadducees” did not believe in a “rising from the dead”, so they asked Him the question in our next few verses.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we discover yet another group of “religious leaders” who attempted to “trap” Jesus in His speech. These “Sadducees” did not believe in a “resurrection”, so their question was to come from that line of thinking. Jesus will respond to their question in a wise and clarifying way, and those who are interested in the “resurrection” should pay careful attention to what He says. God's desire is to provide everlasting life to people, and when they submit their lives to God's Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He promises to grant it to them. Those who are wise will carefully consider the “resurrection” words of Jesus and align themselves with what He says about “eternal life”.

Next time Luke shares how the religious leaders say when a man's brother dies, “his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
