Jesus Weeping Over Jerusalem - Luke 19:41

The beloved physician Luke wrote how Jesus' disciples brought a young donkey,to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. And as he went, they spread their clothes in the way. And when he was come near, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen. Saying, Blessed be the King that comes in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest. And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke your disciples. And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out, and in chapter nineteen and verse forty-one of his book Luke shared when Jesus, “came near, he beheld the city, and wept over it” where we read:

And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

The verse reads,And when he was come near, he beheld the city, ...” Luke began with the words, “and when” or “and at the time and moment” “he was come near” which means “Jesus approached and was close to Jerusalem”, “he beheld the city” or “Jesus looked at and considered Jerusalem”. Luke shared how Jesus “observed” the “city” of Jerusalem when He came close to it.

The verse continues, ... and wept over it,Luke added the words, “and wept” or “and mourned and lamented as a sign of pain and grief” “over it” which means “over the city”. Luke shared how Jesus “cried with great pain and grief over Jerusalem”.

When we meditate upon Luke's words in this verse, we learn of the great “grief” Jesus expressed over the city of Jerusalem. He knew this was a place that held many people whom He loved, and because they refused to receive Him as their “Savior and Lord”, they were to pay a great price in their future. God desires to have a personal relationship with every person, and He knows there will be many who refuse to receive Him. Jesus said, Enter you in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it” (See Matthew 7:13-14). Anyone who examines Jesus' “weeping” over Jerusalem should know His passion to “save” them from their sins is deep and strong, and He is willing to forgive everyone who submits to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “if you had known, even you, at least in this your day, the things which belong unto your peace! but now they are hid from your eyes., so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
