The Poor Widow Cast in More - Luke 21:3

Luke the beloved physician shared how Jesus “looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse three of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “this poor widow has cast in more” where we read:

And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow has cast in more than they all:

The verse reads,And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, ...” Luke began with the words, “and he said” or “and Jesus uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “of a truth” which means “in reality and most certainly” “I say unto you” or “I, Jesus, utter, declare and proclaim to His disciples” the following words. Luke shared how Jesus began to make a “truthful” statement concerning the “giving” of the “needy widow” and the “wealthy men”.

The verse continues, “... that this poor widow has cast in more than they all:” Luke added the words, “that this poor widow” or “that the needy woman whose husband had died” “has cast in” which means “threw, scattered and let go of” “more than they all” or “a greater and more abundant amount than each, every, the whole and everyone of the wealthy men”. Luke shared how Jesus said the “needy widow” put more in the treasury than any of the “wealthy” men.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus viewed the “giving” of the “needy widow” and the “wealthy men”. Even though this “poor woman” only had what seemed to be a small amount monetarily, to her it was all she had. The rich men gave out of their abundance, and Jesus will have more to say about this in our next verse. For now let us examine our “giving”. Do we give in a sacrificial manner like this “needy widow”? Since the Lord Jesus is paying attention to the way we “give”, would He commend our “giving” as well? God is a giver, and no one out gives Him. Those who are wise will understand He gave His only begotten Son Jesus so the world could be saved from their sins and live forever with Him. Let all who consider the giving of our Great and Wonderful God and this “needy widow” and follow their examples in the way we should “give” unto Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus says, “she of her penury has cast in all the living that she had”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
