Not One Stone Upon Another - Luke 21:6

Luke the beloved physician shared concerning Jesus, “as some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, ...”, and in chapter twenty-one and verse six of his book Luke shared how Jesus said, “the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another” where we read:

As for these things which you behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

The verse reads,As for these things which you behold, the days will come, ...” Luke began with the words, “as for these things” or “pertaining to the goodly stones and gifts which adorn the temple in Jerusalem” “which you behold” which means “that you disciples of Jesus observe, notice and discover”, “the days will come” or “the times will arise and appear” when the following will occur. Luke shared how Jesus began to share about a time when the following would happen to the temple in Jerusalem.

The verse continues, “... in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.” Luke added the words, “in the which” or in “that” “there shall not be left” which means “there will not exist, be kept or allowed to stay in place” “one stone upon another” or “one single building stone that is stacked upon another building stone”, “that shall not be thrown down” which means “that will not be cast down, scattered, disunited or subverted”. Luke shared how Jesus said not a single one of the building stones within the temple in Jerusalem would be left to stand upon another.

When we think through Luke's words in this verse, we see how Jesus prophesied the “temple” in Jerusalem would be dismantled stone by stone. Massive building stones were employed in the construction of the “temple”, and one would think this would be impossible. However, when the “temple” burned in 70 a.d. under the Roman government, the gold within the “temple” melted into the cracks of the large stones. The Roman army pushed the stones off each other one by one to retrieve the gold, and the prophesy of Jesus was fulfilled - “there shall not be left one stone upon another”. Jesus knew the future for the “temple” in Jerusalem, and He knows the eternal future of every person. He came to the earth to save people from their sins so they could live with Him forever, and those who yield their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven and receive everlasting life with God.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus' disciples ask Him, “when shall these things be?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
