A Samaritan Woman - John 4:7

John the apostle wrote, “When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,). He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. Then came he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour”, and in chapter four and verse seven of his book, John shared how, “there came a woman of Samaria to draw water” where we read:

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink.

The verse reads,There came a woman of Samaria to draw water:” John began with the words, “The came a woman” or “there approached and came forth a female human being” “of Samaria” which means “from the region of Samaria which means guardianship and was a territory in Palestine” “to draw water” or “to bale or pump out water”. John shared how a “woman” from the “area of Samaria” approached the “well” to “obtain water” from it.

The verse goes on to say, Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink.. John continued with the words, “Jesus said unto her” which means “Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate uttered, declared and proclaimed to the woman”, “Give me to drink” or “grant, bestow, supply and furnish to me, Jesus, a drink of water from the well”. John shared how Jesus asked the “woman” who approached the “well” to give Him a drink of water from it.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn about a “woman” who approached the “well” where Jesus was “seated”. As she arrived, Jesus asked her to give Him a drink of water. We shall find this to be very troubling for the “woman”, but this question will lead to Jesus presenting her with a message that would change her life. God often uses the natural things to gain the attention of people, and once He has gained their attention, He teaches them to depend and trust upon Him. Jesus made a request of this woman, and it led to her being changed forever. What question is He asking today that may lead to change for everyone who is reading these words?

Next time John shares how Jesus', “disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
