Jesus at Jacob's Well - John 4:6

John the apostle wrote, “When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,). He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. And he must needs go through Samaria. Then came he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph”, and in chapter four and verse six of his book, John shared how Jesus came to, “Jacob's well” where we read:

Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well:

and it was about the sixth hour.

The verse reads,Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well:” John began with the words, “Now Jacob's well was there” which means “moreover the fountain or spring fed well belonging to Jacob whose name means heel-catcher or supplanter and was the second son of Isaac and the progenitor of the Israelites” “Jesus therefore” or “Jesus whose name means Jehovah is Salvation and is the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God then, wherefore and consequently”, “being wearied with his journey” which means “exhausted, tired and labored with wearisome toil and effort”, “sat thus on the well” or “became seated therefore upon the well which was fountain or spring fed”. John shared how the “well” which belonged to “Jacob” was in the location of “Sychar” within “Samaria”.

The verse continues, and it was about the sixth hour.”. John added the words, “and it was about” which means “and the time of day was around and close to” “the sixth hour” or “the sixth hour of the day or around twelve noon”. John shared how the time was around “noon” or in the middle of the day.

When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn that “Jacob's well” was located at “Sychar” within “Samaria”, and Jesus stopped to be “seated to rest” upon the “well”. This demonstrates the humanity of Jesus as He was “tired” from His journey, and the idea of Him stopping at this “well” was “physically” beneficial. The “well” had spiritual significance too because Jesus was intentional in His travels. He was seated at this location because He desired to reach another person with His “gospel”, and He is willing to receive every person who believes and trusts in Him. Let all who read these words know Jesus became “physically exhausted” in the same manner as we do, and He was willing to endure this to bring to us His “salvation”.

Next time John shares how, “there came a woman of Samaria to draw water”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
