The Jews' Passover in Jerusalem - John 2:13

John the apostle shared how Jesus turned water into wine, and he wrote how Jesus, “went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days”, and in chapter two and verse thirteen of his book, John shared how, “the Jews' passover was at hand”, where we read:

And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

The verse reads, “And the Jews' passover was at hand, ... John began with the words, “And the Jews' which means “and the people who belong to the Jewish nation'” “passover” or “paschal sacrifice (which was accustomed to be offered for the people's deliverance of old from Egypt)” “was at hand” which means “was near or imminent”. John shared how the “paschal sacrifice” of the Jewish nation was imminent.

The verse continues, “... and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,” John added words, “and Jesus” which refers to “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation” “went up to Jerusalem” or “ascended to the city of Jerusalem whose name means set you double peace and is the capital of Palestine”. John shared how “Jesus” ascended toward the “city of Jerusalem”.

When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn about the timing of this venture of Jesus as well as the location to which He was traveling. The elevation of Jerusalem is such that anyone who travels there “ascends” into the city, and Jesus knew the time for “Passover” or the “paschal sacrifice” was near. Jesus continued with His plan of “salvation” for mankind, and this visit to Jerusalem will continue to demonstrate His power and authority to provide “forgiveness of sins” and “everlasting life” to all who believe and trust in Him.

Next time John shares how Jesus, “found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
